This hurricane season is projected to be extremely active, with up to 25 storms predicted to occur. This may seem alarming, but there is nothing to worry about as long as you take the right precautionary steps.  There are some important things that you and your family need to do in order to be prepared and protected.

  • Make an emergency plan. This includes knowing what you are going to take with you and where if you have to evacuate, having a set location for your family to meet up after the storm if you happen to get separated, and making sure everyone is informed and knows the plan.
  • Build or restock your emergency preparedness kit. This should include food with a long shelf life, plenty of water, flashlights, batteries, portable chargers, warm clothes, a first-aid kit, extra meditation you may need, as well as any personal items or important documents that you want to keep safe.
  • Consider adding or increasing flood coverage. Knowing your home is protected in a storm can give you some peace of mind in a stressful situation, especially if you have to evacuate. Talk to your DSI agent today if you are interested in adding or increasing your flood coverage on your policy.
  • Familiarize yourself with local emergency evacuation plans. It is important to know where you will need to go if evacuation becomes necessary and the route you will need to take to get there. You may not have access to that information in the middle of a storm, so it is better to know beforehand.
  • Stay tuned to local wireless emergency alerts, TV, or radio for weather updates, emergency instructions, or evacuation orders. If you have to evacuate, find low-risk areas that can harbor your family.
  • Bring masks, gloves, hand sanitizer and other supplies to minimize your risks. If the situation arises where you would need to evacuate, you are going to be sure to bring these items to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
