On Monday December 10th, 2018, I received a call from a doctor client of mine. It went something like this…
On Thursday of last week, our computer system was held at ransom because someone in our office downloaded some ransomware unknowingly. The criminals told me that I had 24 hours to send them $15,000 of bitcoin or my data would be erased! I had no idea how to purchase bitcoin but I had no choice. After sending them the bitcoin, our software was released back to us. We are out $15,000, is it covered by our insurance?
I think this situation is going to happen more and more. There is cyber insurance that would cover this type of loss. It is typically NOT included in a regular insurance policy that a doctors office would have purchased. It needs to be a separate insurance policy.
