With today’s ever-changing technology, locating the best home alarm system for your family can be a challenge. Or, you may be asking yourself “Do I even need a home alarm system when my dog can do the job?” But at Darr Schackow Insurance, we know there’s more to great home security than merely keeping strangers off your doorstep. Here are just a few important factors to consider when it comes to selecting the best security system for your family.

Among the most common reasons people want an alarm system installed is to protect their valuables. A home alarm can also scare off potential burglars and deter neighborhood crime. Some systems will notify authorities if something is amiss without you even having to lift a finger! Others allow you to remotely monitor what’s happening in your home. Depending on your provider, this notification can also alert you of fire or gas problems, thermostat controls, locked doors, lights that were left on and control other tech gadgets, (things your dog definitely can’t do!).

Although protection is the biggest advantage for using a home alarm system, another benefit is that it may help to slightly lower your home insurance costs. We recommend giving your Darr Schackow Insurance agent a call for details on how you may be able to save a few bucks.

Before installing a security system, it’s important to understand the differences between the types of available systems and the pros and cons of each. The most common home alarm system is a monitored system. This system alerts a call center if your alarm is triggered and automatically contacts the police. A downfall of this type of system is that when the alarm is set off, it can take some time for authorities to arrive. Monitored systems can also be a tad pricey.

In contrast to a monitored system, an unmonitored alarm system sets off a loud home siren when the alarm is triggered, but authorities are not automatically called. It is up to you or your neighbors to react to the the alarm and alert the police. A major advantage to this system is that you don’t have to pay for monitoring fees, but it does leave you at the mercy of others if you’re not at home.

A home alarm system is a great investment to protect your family and your belongings. Feel free to contact your DSI agent if you have questions or would like to discuss your homeowners insurance or security system - we’re here to help!
