If you’re like most parents, it’s up to you to teach your children how to drive. While that is no easy task to begin with, it is also up to you to explain car insurance to your kids and make sure that they get the right coverage. But where do you begin?

1. Lay it out. A good place to start would be to tell your child what kind of insurance coverage is available. There’s liability coverage that protects them if they’re to blame for an accident, there’s comprehensive coverage that handles the damage to the car he/she is driving and then there’s collision coverage that pays to repair or replace a vehicle if he/she is involved in a crash. There are also common add-ons like roadside assistance, zero depreciation, loss of personal belongings, and others.

2. Warn. The next step would be to explain to them the direct link between safe driving and better policies. As new drivers they may not understand that they can be penalized or rewarded by insurance companies based on their driving record. This is important to embed early on to prevent big problems later. Also explain how important it is to always carry proof of insurance and to never let an uninsured driver get behind the wheel of their car.

3. Research. Based on your new drivers needs and budget, finding the right policy may be tricky. Their coverage needs and financial restrictions will most likely be different from your own and you may not know how to consult on the specifics. This is where the research begins. Research the different carriers’ policies and packages and be sure to read the fine print! It is not uncommon for a person to think they are insured for something that their policy doesn’t cover.

4. Shop. Once you’ve researched the options available, it’s time to shop. Take your list of “must haves” around town and see what you’re quoted between competitors. This process isn’t an easy one, but it’s necessary in order to ensure you’re not under OR over covered.

We understand that while this journey is necessary, it can feel extremely challenging and overwhelming (especially for a new driver). As an insurance agency we will work on your behalf to research and shop the best deals for you! We make a point to understand each of our clients and their needs better than they know themselves. We anticipate the tough stuff and won’t stop searching until we’ve found the perfect fit for you and your lifestyle.
