Even if you are not interested in antiques, it is still possible to succumb to the thrill of “what if” as you consider that dusty old bowl or piece of china that you never really liked but never quite got around to throwing out. How do you find out once and for all if it is junk or something valuable enough to warrant listing on your Florida home insurance?

Some people take their items along to the “Antiques Roadshow”. This is a TV show that travels round the country with a team of assessors and members of the public can bring along items to be valued.

While many people find that that dusty piece may be unusual if not particularly valuable, in 2009 one lucky woman had a collection of jade valued at up to an estimated $1.07million. She had inherited four pieces of Chinese jade which turned out to have been made during the 18th century, one of them for the then Emperor.

While the TV show is one route to a valuation, there are many reputable auction houses in the US who are likely to be able to tell you whether your piece is a long-lost treasure. Then all you have to decide is whether to keep it or sell it. In the event that you decide to keep it, remember to make sure it is covered under your Florida home insurance or with a separate insurance policy.
