Checking your Florida home insurance to see if it covers you for the most likely natural disasters in your area is a prudent measure. Many areas of the state are considered high risk and you may need to take out extra insurance in some cases to cover you for the more frequently occurring weather events in Florida.
A handy resource to help you find out which are the most likely extreme weather events to occur in your state is at the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH). Simply go to the section marked “peril map”, click on your state and see the list of severe weather events. Data for the map is compiled from a number of federal agencies.
Here in Florida, the extreme events are listed as: extreme heat, floods, hurricanes, thunderstorms, tornadoes and wildfires.
Once you have identified the perils in your area, you should check to see if your Florida home insurance covers damage caused by such events. Typically, in Florida, Flood and Hurricane coverage are not included, but coverage can be obtained. For those risks not covered by your existing home insurance, you may wish to purchase the additional coverage. Contact one of our agents with any questions or to obtain the quotes you need.
